Conservation + Light: Understanding These Museum Frenemies

Starting from the perspective of ‘all light damages’ and ‘light quantity dictates visual acuity’ it is easy to see why conservation and light can be in conflict. But with the right application of today’s LED, optics, and controls technology, there is no reason that these two cannot live in closer harmony. Going beyond just brightness to the impact of light spectrum and distribution on visual perception can positively impact conservation and visitor experience. Paired with easy to implement lighting controls technology, the lighting system has the potential to be an intelligent asset in exhibition management. This presentation is ideal for all level of museum professionals.

More than Energy:

Benefits of LEDs in Museums

While many can quantify the energy savings of a switch from halogen to LED lighting, there are numerous other benefits to calculate. An LED retrofit will positively impact all aspects of a museum including operations, exhibition, conservation, education, marketing, and development. Evaluating the cost of ownership and longevity while selecting and lighting controls that are right for the institution will determine just how much benefit will be captured. Working through each of these elements and connecting them to the relevant departments, this session will mix demonstration and technical presentation to highlight the great impact that lighting can have in your project.
